Residents past and present gathered last week to celebrate the official re-opening of Chepstow’s newly restored ‘Mount House’, a 200 year old merchant’s house set high above the town with panoramic views across the Wye Valley, which has been redeveloped and converted into luxury living accommodation by Bovale Ltd.
Guests watched as the Town Mayor of Chepstow, Cllr. David Dovey, unveiled a
commemorative plaque and cut a replica ‘Mount House’ cake, surrounded by former residents of the old building in its different incarnations, including former staff and pupils of The Mount School, which closed in 1981, previous business occupiers, Mr & Mrs. Brian Bird of the Bird Group, as well as Mrs. Royle, the first resident in the newly restored mansion.
Brenda Avery, the daughter of the first Headmaster of The Mount School, and her husband Bob Avery also took advantage of the occasion to present original plans for the development of The Mount to Ann Rainsbury of Chepstow Museum. The plans, which are signed by the architect Walter Evill, date back to 1883.
Commenting on the sympathetic restoration and redevelopment of The Mount, Cllr. Dovey said, “The Mount is an iconic building for Chepstow; it has a fantastic history and is the first building of note seen here as you enter Wales from England. I am therefore delighted to be here at the re-opening of this wonderful old building to pay tribute to the superb restoration project that has brought it back into useful life. The standard of workmanship is clearly outstanding, with many original features sensitively restored and retained. It is the best restoration project I have seen for a long time.”
He added, “It is my view that there are not many buildings completed today that will stand the test of time, but I feel sure that in this case another hundred years from now people will still admire and enjoy The Mount. Both Bovale and the town of Chepstow can be proud of a job well done!”
The Mount House has been converted into one to three bedroom luxury apartments, with a high quality development of twenty mews homes in a courtyard to the rear of the house. The redevelopment has attracted keen interest locally since building began.
The scheme has reinstated the neo classical Mount house to its original condition, fully refurbishing the house after removal of later extensions to provide four generous apartments, which benefit from the wonderful proportions of the house and respect the original 19th Century plan.
The twenty new homes, arranged in a courtyard, are built on land formerly occupied by the stable block and other domestic offices which would have supported a house of this magnitude.
The courtyard is very private and will be barely visible either from the road or from the town, allowing The Mount to retain its prominent position and the view of the House in the wider landscape to remain unspoiled.
“The restored listed building is the focal point for the scheme,” confirmed Charles Collier of Bovale Ltd. “The Mount has undergone a series of changes over the years, having been initially a family residence, requisitioned during War time, established as a school and finally becoming office premises. Our scheme restores the balance and style of the House, whilst generating new, high quality residential accommodation for area.”
